Product Review: Betty Bossi Veggie Twister

Product Review: Betty Bossi Veggie Twister

I think in any kitchen where some fun is needed then a spiralizer is needed also!I didn't want to spend too much money on one, so I did some hunting around & found this Betty Bossi one that wasn't too expensive.

Here's my review and also some instructions on how it works.

Pros:

  • I love how easy it is to use
  • Goes in the dishwasher - or easy to handwash
  • 2 shapes of noodles - which I love
  • Inexpensive
  • Doesn't take up a lot of cupboard space

Cons:

  •  Having to un-wind it is a bit annoying
  • Can't use it for thick vegetables at all (they won't fit in the case itself)
  • Small part of the vegetable is leftover and can't really be used with the spirals (not a huge issue, to be honest - I usually just eat it!)
  • Only thing I find frustrating about it is having to unwind it to put the next piece in.

How it works:

The twister is comprised of 3 parts.

The two dark green parts slide into the light green part, which makes for compact storage.

The 2 dark green parts are for the different types of noodles.

Either wide, like thick rice noodles, or stringy, like spaghetti.

Cut the end off your desired vegetable. Chop in half & position one half on the spikes at the end of the light green part to hold it in place.

Cover the vegetable with the dark green part of choice, and twist until the noodles begin to press out.

Continue to turn the light green compartment until it is all the way down, pressed against the dark green compartment as shown below.

That is when you have to re-wind the whole thing again before you can insert the other half of the vegetable to twist that also!

A small part of the vegetable will be leftover & cannot be spiralized with the rest.

It makes fantastic noodles & spaghetti!

Best of all - it is dishwasher safe! Anything I don't have to wash up is good! ;-)

Here's some of my recipes using the spiralizer:
          Lentil bolognese
          Zucchini fettucini
          Pumpkin cheeze sauce

Overall Rating: 4/5
Definitely worth getting one if you'd like to try out a spiralizer without spending too much & don't have the cupboard space for a larger one.

I got mine from Victorias Basement, they are also available online at Amazon.

  1. I have one of those!
Good review, you've summed it up nicely. This is a great spiral slicer to start with.
I upgraded to a bigger one because for the quantity of raw veg I eat it drove me (and my bung wrists) nuts screwing and unscrewing this one... it takes more time than the bigger versions- but then they take up far more space!
Glad to see you're getting into the reviews- I keep meaning to do more of them but, you know, time..

    3. Claire, you said you bought a bigger spiralizer. Which one you got ? This one looks good, but I'm polyarthritic... my wrist will burn half-way done ! I was looking for one who made small noodles (I think that the Paderno spiralizer does too thick). Thank you !

    4. There are now ones available in Kmart and various house/kitchen shops for approx $15 that are quite large but work quite well :-)

  4. I had one which I bought hoping to make broccoli slaw with it. It didn't work it was impossible for the spikes to hold the stem of broccoli in place. I'm thinking it's good for softer vegetables like cucumbers and zucchini, but will not work on carrots or broccoli stems.

    1. That's a shame! I have had success using a carrot though.

    2. It does not work as they describe. Cannot use sweet potato, beetroot or small pieces of vegetable. Does not use all the vegetable - a lot of waste. Very disappointed. Great for zucchini lovers.

  6. I have two also and both of them only make the spirals! I'm so frustrated that I can't get it to do the spaghetti.what am I doing wrong, I have tried both ends. The blade that looks like it would do the spaghetti is covered and I can't figure out if I have to remove the end piece to get access to that blade. Help !

    1. I'm not sure why it's not working! Esp if you've tried both ends. I definitely can't see a blade cover :-/
      Good luck working it out!

  7. Hi there :) - the Amazon link that you provided is not the original German Betty Bossi gadget, but a cheap copy made in China which seems to get terrible reviews. I'm considering getting one of these, but just doing a bit of research first. The German one is a lot more expensive, but no doubt much better quality. Thank you for your review. It was very helpful.

  8. There is a concept about vegetarian food that its not tasty,Infact people dont go on diet due to this fact.
But now taste of people is changing. You can make very tasteful salads and veggie dishes in minutes due to awesome and modernize kitchen gadgets such as vegetable slicer. It can cut your vegetables in to thin strips or any shape of you desire in few seconds. I have read a good review of HEG spiral slicer on this site http://amzn.to/1otUamh

  9. Cassandra is quite correct - there IS one blade that's covered. Just look inside the end cap - two blades on the inside, one blade showing in the outside.

    1. Oh yes I understand what you mean by that now - that is for the function that prepares the spaghetti strands instead of the fettucini ones. The part on the inside just slices the vegetables into thin pieces first :-)
